I read a lot of books – fiction and non-fiction alike. And out of all the books I’ve read, hands-down the best book I’ve ever read is easily The Four Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferris. I’ve purchased copies to hand out to my family and friends. I believe in it that much.
Focusing on the fundamentals and efficiency pays off – just look at his bio.
To summarize the book in one paragraph: it’s possible for you to make 300k a year working less than 4 hours per week. You just have to pick the right business model, be efficient, and think outside the box. He provides business models that almost always work.
It sounds crazy, but I’d base my entire reputation on my endorsement of the book. It’s that good.
Who is Timothy Ferris?
Timothy Ferris is a fringe-thinker. By that I mean he’s an extremist – a radical. He ignores “middle of the road” approaches to everything, and focuses on extreme efficiency and learning the fundamentals in order to achieve great success – this guy isn’t typical, average, or mediocre.
He’s a world kick-boxing champion, he’s a past world tango-dancing champion, he’s a best-selling author, he’s a self-made multi-millionaire, he has a cult following, he’s a world traveler – well, you get the point. He’s awesome.
Does It Work?
A book called “The Four-Hour Workweek” sounds like a scam, I know. He even talks about that in the book. But it’s not a scam – it works. It’s really just about being super efficient and not wasting time or resources – doing that while starting a business almost automatically leads to success.
No “theory” of fluffy principles – everything in the book has actionable steps that you can do yourself. It’s a step-by-step guide to efficient success, not a pep rally for pointless “theory” that doesn’t work in the real world.
And no, he’s not peddling anything in the book. No pyramid scheme, no product he’s also selling, nothing – just raw data, efficiency tutorials, and business models. It’s life changing.
Within 36 months of reading the book, I was able to move into a working retirement and live with a great, almost-passive income while working less than I did at my 9-5.
What’s In The Book?
Enough about my testimony, let’s talk about what’s actually in the book:
Business Advice. He teaches you how to start a business that is completely outsourced. In other words, you start a business and make the money, but you hire someone else to do the work. This means you work a few hours a week, but still get all the profit. It sounds dumb on paper, but I’ve tried it. It’s bloody genius.
Financial Advice. He teaches you how to focus on making money rather than just budgets and frugality. It sounds simple, but it’s beautifully efficient and will make sense. Read this book to transform your financial situation.
Productivity Advice. This is the most important part of the book. Tim explains how to get things done literally 80%+ faster – it’s called the 80-20 rule. It works. I used his productivity principles to cut my work time from 18- hour days to 3-hour days. This alone makes the book worth buying.
Lifestyle Advice. The Four Hour Workweek changed my life. The book is filled with easy-to-understand philosophy that essentially teaches you how to be a person of action. The book guides you to stop focusing on irrational busy work, and to just focus the stuff that counts. It teaches you how to overcome your fears. It teaches you how to not just dream – but to actually achieve your dreams.
In the end, The Four-Hour Workweek is the only book I recommend to literally everyone I meet. It’s the only book that I continue to reread – aside from the Bible, of course. It’s the only financial book that I can honestly say has had the most influence on my current and future success.
